We are going to share details of a memorable meeting with an actor who is no longer with us; you will also hear anecdotes from conversations we had with him years ago. But first, let us learn a little about him:
The renowned character actor and freedom fighter Avtar Kishan Hangal (1 February 1914 – 26 August 2012) was born in 1914 in Sialkot (now in Pakistan). His parents lived in Peshawar; he spent his childhood there and moved to Karachi after his father retired. He was involved in theatre from a young age and played memorable roles in various plays. In his early days, he also worked as a tailor. Following the Partition, he settled in Mumbai in 1949 at the age of 32. Upon arriving in Mumbai, he joined the theatre group IPTA alongside Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi. He began his film career in 1966 with Basu Bhattacharya’s film “Teesri Kasam”, at the age of 50.
Brijendra Rehi, producer-director at Darpan Video India, met him on several occasions. He also anchored an episode of a serial based on the Quit India Movement. Additionally, his recollections regarding some of India’s evergreen actresses were preserved in a special programme.
